First 60 minutes with HTC Touch

Having been working hard on a new version of the website, I thought I would wait with producing new articles a couple more days. However, new HTC Touch landed on my desk for a few hours, I could not resist trying it out and sharing my impressions with you in this preview. HTC Touch offers something that other Windows Mobile devices lack - a special touch layer and a software application for easy control with fingers. Read on to find out how this works and if it is a step forward.

Seasoned mobile device users will spot two main differences between HTC Touch and most other pocket PCs. The first one is a minimalist design and extremely small form factor. The other is elevation of the display to the level of the frame, so that you finger can glide smoothly across the whole front panel. This is nothing unusual in smart phones that lack a touch layer but the vast majority of touch-screen devices have a more or less submerged display. Here, though, it is necessary for comfortable finger control around he whole display area.

Dimensions of 58 x 99.9 x 13.9 millimetres and 112 grams of weight rank the HTC Touch among the smallest and lightest Windows Mobile devices. The black version in particular must look extremely appealing (mine was white). Minimalist design means, besides other things, that there are very few controls. They include: a five-way control with a separate white-lit central button and a pair of phone buttons on the front panel, a volume slider on the left side, a power switch on the top side, and a camera button on the right side. A door on the side hides slots for a microSD and a SIM card. The door was initially pretty tough but after a few open/close cycles it loosened up a bit and got friendlier.

The most interesting feature is the screen with a special touch-sensitive layer called HTC TouchFLO, which is designed for finger control. The display offers a standard QVGA resolution and parameters (240 x 320 pixels, 65 thousand colours, 2.8 inch in diagonal), only its readability seemed worse than in other devices. To see how the TouchFLO works, you can check the HTC Touch website. The logic is as follows: for instance, if you want to call someone, you start at the bottom of the display and "draw up" a special application comprising three screens that you can toggle between by sliding to the left or right to find the desired contact and dial it. When you are done, you can hide the application again by dragging down. Obviously, similarity to the upcoming king of the season, Apple iPhone, must be purely accidental:)

If you like viewing web pages on a PDA without optimisation for a smaller display, you will appreciate seamless panning just by sliding your finger across the screen. This applies to other applications as well, such as the Contacts. However, that's about all the new technology can offer, unfortunately.

Previews like this are usually on an enthusiastic note but I cannot avoid being rather sceptical this time. I did not spend enough time with the device to condemn the TouchFLO technology, yet it feels like a half-hearted attempt. It may not be entirely HTC's fault, as it must swim against the current. Since Windows Mobile 5, Microsoft has been looking for ways to diminish the role of the stylus and make it easier to control pocket devices with the keyboard/keypad. WM5 soft keys, keyboard shortcuts and other innovations were meant to unify control of devices with and without a touch screen. This has put serious limitations on HTC's effort to introduce a button-less, touch-controlled device to challenge the iPhone.

There is nothing wrong about it. The application is fast, reliable and efficient in the few tasks it can handle. However, when you need more than those pre-defined actions, the familiar little cross is back in the top right corner, to say nothing about text input (I can't understand why the device lacks a full-size on-screen keyboard). This is where TouchFLO fails and you need to take out the stylus - the finger effect is gone. A solution would be a more substantial change to the GUI but this in turn could be incompatible with third-party applications.

I wonder what the reaction will be - I expect two contrary ones: people will either love it or despise it. We shall wait till it is available in more geographies to see.

One of the hottest cell phones on the market was just recently put out by Verizon Wireless and LG Mobile Phones. The fact is the LG Chocolate is a hot item, due to the sleek design and advanced tools, such as VZ Navigator and V CAST. With the Chocolate, you get a sexy little cell phone with advanced capabilities and something everyone else will want.

Actually, when you first look at the Chocolate closed, it doesn't look like anything too special. With a dark screen, you can't even see the camera on it. However, all you have to do is press a side key or slide the phone to the open position and the cell phone springs to life. When you do go to open the phone, don't be surprised if you feel a little resistance. The fact is this slide is spring loaded and once you get past a certain point, the Chocolate will smoothly come to the open position .

Once opened, the screen turns on and their will be buttons are lighted and your camera and phone will be set for you to use. While you can definitely tell at this point that it is a phone, you'll never hear anyone say they have one that looks just like it, unless they own a Chocolate, too. It's actually quite unique looking and while it may seem kind of slippery, it's a remarkable phone to use.

One of the main reasons this phone is doing so well is that it has plenty of features that most users find very appealing. For example, this cell phone has the ability to play music while the user browses the Web or sends messages. It even has a key that is dedicated for music to allow easy access to all of the play lists. Another great music feature is that the songs you download are automatically organized by the artist, genre, and album which will make it much easier to manage all of your music settings.

Of course, the camera feature is amazing, as well. Once you open the phone, the camera will be in view and all you need to do is press a side button and the viewfinder will start up. All in all, it only takes about two seconds to get your camera ready fro action. On the viewfinder, you'll find a status bar that will tell you what the current resolution settings are and it will show you whether it is in picture or video mode. You'll find many icons are hidden, but you will find this LG Chocolate quite easy to use.

The capabilities that the LG Chocolate has are updated and truly wonderful. For example, when browsing the Web, you will no longer have to do any scrolling and searching on the page for the information you want. The screen allows for much easier viewing than other cell phones. You'll also find that you can simply type in the URL you want and within moments, you'll have what you need.

These, of course, are just a few of the reasons that the LG Chocolate has become such a hot item. With a sleek and sexy look, many will want to try out this cell phone themselves and it's guaranteed they won't want to let go of it!

Check Gmail On Your iPhone Using This Easy IMAP Setup

Most of us have heard that Gmail is fast becoming the top email client worldwide. There are several reasons why this is happening. Google has made sure their email service is similar to their Google search engine, meaning there are no ads splattered all over your page, which enables you to find whatever information or emails that are needed quick as a flash. So, for those who are continuously on the move, you absolutely want the ability to access your Gmail account whenever and wherever you might be.

Those of you who own an Apple iPhone are no doubt wondering how your Gmail account can be integrated with your iPhone to allow the viewing of your emails to be literally as easy as looking at your iPhone screen.

A recent announcement from Google states that one can now add a protocol to an iPhone strictly for Gmail account access. OK, when you are done with doing these steps, don't click the Gmail option. This option has not been updated to the latest IMAP settings. Instead, you will want to click "Other". Once you have finished that step, you can begin entering your personal information. Start by entering your "Name", then enter the "Host Name", which is:"imap(dot)gmail(dot)com". Once these steps have been finished, you must enter your personal Gmail account address, which will have the @gmail(dot)com at the end of your username. For example (your-user-name @gmail(dot)com)

Now you move to the "Outgoing Mail Server", or "SMTP". Under "Host Name" you should enter:"smtp(dot)gmail(dot)com". Finally you must save all of these entries. That was easy! Your IMAP Gmail account is now set up. You now can view all of your old and new Gmail messages.

It makes no difference if you are a serious business person who needs continuous access to email, or a student who wants the ability to check messages between classes in school, you can now do so on your iPhone after you activate your IMAP service.
